The soles are a sturdy rubber for smoothness and easy of walking, and the top strap is firmly "bolted" into the sandal so it does not easily break away. The "samue", in essence is a monk's working or non-spiritual clothing. A very old style working suit used back in the early years of Japan, it's so engrained into the culture that it is still a common sight to see even today.
