The Rube Goldberg Machine is a complex creation that is powered by a domino effect that sets off a chain reaction of activities to ultimately result in a desired (often very simple) action. One prime example of the Rube Goldberg Machine is a famous scene from the movie Goonies that triggers events to open a gate. In NHK's effort to spark the ingenuity in children, the program Pata Gora Suichi (Pythagora Switch) was created, which featured a fantastic and elaborate Rube Goldberg Machine to which the end result was to display the Pata Gora Suichi title with each episode. Although a simple concept, the devices they create are far from simple, often misleading the view to look down when items are actually "falling upwards" and even can be considered a work of art displaying the beauty of physics. This DVD photobook set features 33 of NHK's best machines that will dazzle kids of all ages, and will keep you superglued to the TV set even if you tried to get away. The photobook this DVD comes encased in shows the various devices that were created, details what items were used and shows you the process of creating these devices in your own home. The machines are so inspiring, that you may even choose to follow in the footsteps of these artisans and create your own unique versions. An absolutely wonderful title with a run time of 19 mins.

Studio Ghibli completists will definitely be interested in this -- "Short Short", a complete collection of all the odds and ends (commercials, music videos) that Ghibli has created over the years, from 1992 to 2005. Included in this 42 minute collection are shorts directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Yoshifumi Kondou, Yoshiyuki Momose, Osamu Tanabe, Shinji Hashimoto, and Takeshi Inamura, and feature not only new characters, but familiar characters from Totoro, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, and more. The styles of the shorts vary as well, sometimes simple, sometimes rich, and sometimes experimental, these 42 minutes are fascinating animation from start to finish. Presented in chronological order and presented in full frame or letterbox where appropriate, we'll see commercials for Lawsons (a convenience store chain), their advertisement for the the Ghibli Museum, and the excellent House Curry commercials, which capture the feeling of Japan during the Showa era. Of particular interest to Ghibli fans are the music videos -- the very rare "On Your Mark" (aka "Castles in the Sky") video by Chage & Aska presented here on DVD for the first time (this video also has an English track and full English subtitles) directed by Miyazaki himself. Other music videos are the futuristic trio of stories by Yasutaka Nakada ("Portable Airport" "Space Station No.9" and "Floating City Planning") and the singalong by Meiko Haigou, "The 'Which? Which?" Song". A special bonus is the accompanying booklet that describes all the pieces along with storyboards and other information. Finally all the odds and ends of the Ghibli world are available on one convenient DVD. Region 2, 2.0 & 5.1ch Dolby (where applicable), full frame and letterbox where applicable.

A wonderful story from Japanese novelist Saeko Himuro and Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli, this is the painful story of growing up in a rural high school in Kochi Prefecture, on the Japanese island of Shikoku. In the summer of his 17th year, Taku Morisaki is making preparations for college when Rikako Muto transfers into his class. A mysterious and sometimes difficult city girl who has trouble getting along with others in the school, Rikako nevertheless slowly captures the interest of Taku. A beautiful movie based on a Japanese novel that captures a painful and melancholy moment in the lives of two people growing up in modern Japan.
The DVD release features two discs, one with the full feature in wide screen format, with optional English subtitles. The second disc features the film told through the original storyboards, a real treat for fans of Japanese animation, as well as a 50 minute feature looking back on the creation of the movie, and promotional trailers. Directed by Here is Greenwood and Orange Road Movie director Tomomi Mochizuki. Both Peter and Daisuke recommend this wonderful film.

(What is this?)
A staggering achievement of animation, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa) is the film that made director Hayao Miyazaki into what he is today: the premier Japanese creator of animation. A thousand years in the future, the remnants of humanity struggle for survival against the giant insects of the Sea of Corruption. The story of Princess Nausicaa and her battle to save her people from the political maneuvering of Kushana of Torumekia, who seeks to destroy the insects using the forbidden technology of the past, it is a classic Miyazaki story in every respect, and captures his grand vision and imagination. After years of waiting, it's finally available on DVD!
The 2-disc DVD release features full optional English subtitles, and it includes many extras provided by the director, including audio commentary, theatrical trailers, a full storyboard version of the film, and teasers. Please note that this DVD is region 2, a Japanese release but with full optional English subtitles -- you will need to play it in a region free DVD player or your computer if you're in the U.S. Also please note that this is the legal, legitimate product produced by Mr. Miyazaki himself, not a Taiwanese bootleg.

J-List is proud to carry the first DVD of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation, a reworked series of movies of the classic Gundam series that aired in 1985. It tells the story of what happened seven years after the One Year War, when the struggle against Zion gives way to the battle to defeat the Titans of Earth. This fabulous film has been completely reworked by Tomino himself, combining a great deal of new animation for fans of the original to enjoy. Since she has no relatives of her own to visit, she calls upon her sister-in-law's relations to live the life of a farmer. Never could there be a greater dichotomy from the world that she has just left.
It is in this simpler, yet nonetheless hardworking, world that Taeko begins to remember her life as a fifth grader in Yamagata Prefecture. It is through these remembrances of her youth that she comes to understand herself and her own future.
