Manga (comics) is a piece of Japanese culture that the Japanese can proudly boast about, not only because of their fantastic work, but their ability to appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Shonen Ace and Ultra Jump are among the two most popular publications that bring you the latest and greatest adventure stories for hungry readers to consume. J-List is happy to add to their list of publications, Comic Yuri Hime, a delightful publication that caters to the female crowd. Published quarterly, it features around 15 - 20 stories with a central focus on Yuri or female relationships (such as the story "Nana" for example). Stories range from fantasy to modern pieces with romantic nuances to add a light feminine touch to your reading. A great inspirational piece in both illustration and story work that both guys and gals will enjoy, all in a telephone book thick format. Each issue is approximately 300 - 400 pages in length with a mixture of full color and black and white illustrations. Also makes a great study item, immersing you into real vocabulary used in typical Japanese conversations rather than the formulaic dry textbooks you'll constantly exposed to. Note: while these yuri manga explore female/female romantic relationships, there is no adult content in Yuri Hime.

This magazine subscription can be purchased on a revolving basis (billed monthly or as each issue comes in) or annually (for a flat fee w/ SAL shipping included).

One of the questions we get asked at J-List a lot is, "I want to start learning Japanese, what book do you recommend?" Most textbooks are entirely dry, uninteresting, and cannot follow a student's pace, leaving students frustrated. However, a new series by The Japan Times has recently taken Japanese language for foreigners by storm, and comes highly recommended by anyone who has taken it -- Genki, An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese. The entire course has 23 lessons, guiding the student from the beginning until the student has mastered elementary grammar and can read not only hiragana and katakana but over 300 of the most commonly used kanji as well.

Each lesson has: 1) a dialogue introducing vocabulary and grammar in a situation the student may find familiar; 2) a list of the vocabulary with hiragana, katakana, kanji and English meaning; 3) grammar with full explanations in English; 4) interesting usage notes; 5) several pages of practice questions designed to be fun and interesting incorporating dialogue skills, writing skills, and thinking skills; 6) additional vocabulary. Each lesson also has a complementary lesson in hiragana/katakana/kanji, with reading and writing exercises. The separate workbook has more writing exercises and kanji writing practice. This is simply the recommended textbook for anyone beginning Japanese up to 3rd level in the JLPT.

THIS BOOK: This is the workbook complementing textbook I. Each lesson follows what has been learned in the corresponding lesson in the textbook, with written exercises to test comprehension of grammar and vocabulary (approximately 6-8 pages of material per lesson). A separate kanji section is included, with space to practice writing kanji, and questions to test kanji knowledge with meanings and readings of the kanji. The pages can be torn out to hand in as assignment (the pages are perforated), and there is space at the top for name. A perfect complement to the textbook and an excellent way to practice and test what has been learned. 7" x 10" (18 x 25.5 cm) 136 pages, card cover perfectbound.
