Beginning kanji study needn't be difficult -- this new series by Alc (who also produce the only monthly magazine for Japanese language study directed at students, the Nihongo Journal) allows us to master the essentials of kanji, covering levels 4 and 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, with only 15 minutes of practice a day! Each lesson contains 6 kanji. Each kanji is introduced with onyomi and kunyomi (the Chinese and Japanese pronunciations. Each kanji also has sample words made with that kanji along with sample sentences to practice understanding and reading in context. Finally, the writing of the kanji is shown (with stroke order) and you are given space to practice writing the kanji. In the second section of the book are short quizzes that test your understanding, and an answer key and index are included. The two volumes together help you learn 555 kanji, and translations are given in English, Chinese and Korean as well. An excellent way to learn kanji -- in small daily doses kanji practice is incredibly manageable and fun at the same time without getting over your head, and if you practice every day, within 3 months you will have a mastery over the kanji necessary for the two lower levels of the JLPT as well as a head start on 2nd level kanji. This purchase is for Volume One (Jou), the first half of this course. 190 pages, perfectbound. Recommended Level: Beginner, but as there is no romaji, the student should be able to already read hirogana and katakana before starting this course.
