For many Westerners, comedy clubs feature stand-up comedians who talk about life through from their own humorous perspective. The traditional art of "Rakugo" is perhaps the closest equivalent in Japan, featuring a comedian/ storyteller, dressed in traditional robes and seated in front of their audience with props in hand to help accentuate their story telling. About 300 years old, Rakugo was originally written to teach people what would be laughed at in order to develop social knowledge, but quickly became a form of entertainment. Some English Rakugo comedy troops have even been established, helping spread the knowledge of Rakugo as part of the Japanese culture. This highly amusing book on Japanese comedy features typical stories told in Rakugo that not only are entertaining, but have wonderful, and often quirky insights into the human nature. Stories like "First Visit to the Shrine" about a father who reluctantly takes his son to his visit to the shrine, and "The Cat's Dish" about an antique collector who tries to swindle his way into getting a valuable ceramic dish that is used as a food dish for stray cats are among the uniquely Japanese stories included. Completely written in English and even has word list glossaries for anyone who is learning the Japanese language.
