Often we are asked by customers what is the best way to study Japanese and often our answer is, to find something that you enjoy about the Japanese language and culture and use that to help facilitate your studies. Whether movies, J-pop, or comics, you'll find yourself with boundless energy to study when you eagerly want to know what people are talking about. This book by Ask Digital Japan is an excellent series for both the beginner and seasoned veteran to quickly learn the Japanese language in no time. Focusing on the lush comic culture that Japan is known for, this paperback supplement gives you a four image comic and goes into great detail about the meaning of each word and the translation of the dialog in plain English. Definitely catering to foreigners and beginners, the comic strips are written in romaji (Roman Alphabet), Hiragana, and Kanji (with furigana pronouncation included), and meanings of key vocabulary words to help anyone develop the Japanese language. Although it is recommended that a student have at least a semester of study (to read the hiragana and basic Kanji), with dedicated effort and practice, beginners will be able to speak in simple phrases in no time.

This edition focuses on the cultural aspects of Japan that one will experience throughout the well defined four seasons, which include New Years Day celebration, summer fireworks festivals, Sakura viewing and more. With countless tidbits that you'll learn in each comic strip, you'll be sure to chuckle at the whimsical antics at the characters that everyone will enjoy. Dennis Recommends!

Twice a year in June and November, a special test is administered to students who hope to enter a Japanese university from abroad. This is a test of Japanese language ability to see if the student possesses enough Japanese ability to study at University level. This test, called the nihonryuugakushiken (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students or EJU) contains a section on Japanese as a Foreign Language that is about the equivalent of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Level 1. Texts to help study for this important test are hard to come by even in Japan. This book is for practicing the kinds of questions that will be on the test, in the format you are likely to see then test when you write it. With 10 different tests to sharpen your skills, including the themed essay, listening and short reading sections. A CD is included for the listening sections, and a detachable booklet is included containing the answers for the multiple choice questions and the scripts for the listening exercises. The EJU only comes twice a year so make sure you're ready with this practice book from J-Research. This text is for intermediate-advanced students of Japanese. 96 pages, includes CD and 32 page answer booklet with explanations of the answers. Recommended Level: High Intermediate - Advanced

"Manga Bible" is a series by leading pros in the field, aimed at artists who want to add more punch to their comic art. Not a "how to draw" as much as it is how to make your work more dynamic, each volume in the series takes a look at a particular problem and attacks it from various angles, addressing the problems in making good manga and how to overcome them. Filled with tips, including use of materials, it also has "practice pages" so you can use the ideas expressed in the book and try on your own. The art in the book is created by "the Pencil club" giving a variety of styles for you to learn from as well. The second book in the series is written by Michinobu Tanaka and is dedicated to the problem of picture layout in comics. The first section shows the general shapes used in classic art and how they relate to comic art (e.g. the triangle shape to show power, the S shape to show flowing beauty, etc). How to use your materials to make the most of these effects follows, as well as how to use these effects to create compelling character portraits. The second section illustrates how to do one page illustrations, showing effective layouts using 1 person, 2 people, 3 people etc. up to large group shots. Also included is a tutorial for using tracing paper to achieve layered shots as well as using tracing paper as a way of improving on previous sketches, and many examples showing the thought processes and intermediate sketches along the way. The third section shows how to use these perspective and layout techniques in the confined space of a manga panel. Finally, there are line drawings on tracing paper from the examples in the second section for you to practice the layering techniques you have learned. An essential book for aspiring manga artists who want to learn more about how to make their art come to life. (Japanese reading ability is essential to be able to understand the written tips, but many of the illustrations speak for themselves.) 164 pages plus 15 pages of Kent board. Perfectbound, 7.25" x 10".

The art in the book is created by "the Pencil club" giving a variety of styles for you to learn from as well. The third book in the series is written by Tsukamoto Hiroyoshi and Mayama Akihisa and is dedicated to the problem of character designs, specifically giving each and every character a unique and individual look. Many beginners make the mistake of creating designs where differences between characters is merely a small change in hair style, creating a comic where everyone looks the same and has no dynamic. Creating new characters requires examining all parts, including the shape of the face, body, stature, and this book takes a look at how you can make your characters come to life with their own uniqueness. Separate sections are given on the head and body, with hundreds of explained examples. There is also a very lengthy section on panel making, and how to use different kinds of panels to effectively tell your story and develop your characters. Finally, there are 7 pages of line drawings on Kent paper to allow you to practice the different character design techniques you have learned. An essential book for aspiring manga artists who want to learn more about how to make their art come to life. (Japanese reading ability is essential to be able to understand the written tips, but many of the illustrations speak for themselves). 216 pages plus 7 pages of Kent board.
