The problem with using general language dictionaries is that they are too general and do not describe the nuances, especially for words that have subtle differences in meaning. Take for example warau meaning generally to laugh or smile. But what about smirk? Chuckle? Smile without laughing? A forced smile? A guffaw? This book will boost your word power significantly. With a year's worth of weekly lessons, each lesson focuses on one general verb and one situation and with pictures and examples you will be able to express yourself in Japanese much more fluently. The pictures and examples allow you to understand the subtle differenes between phrases, with explanations in Japanese (with full furigana) and translations in English, Chinese and Korean for full understanding. Each lesson also has a quiz to test what you have learned and answers are included. A bonus section on idomatic phrases is included as well, for those hard to understand phrases that have a common kanji and seem similar yet have very different meanings, such as for kao (face): kao ga hiroi, kao wo tsubusu, kao wo dasu -- do you know the difference? An excellent and fun way to boost your word power by ALC, the publishers of Nihongo Journal. Recommended Level: High beginner level and upwards. (from level 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test onwards).

For people wanting to take a step beyond the textbooks; for anyone wishing to speak like a native without spending two or three decades in the country learning how to do it for such people as this, Beyond Polite Japanese has collected some 500 words and phrases of prodigious interest. Among the entries are very common, unexceptionable words that Japanese take absolutely for granted, but which you, the student of the language, must struggle mightily to make your own. Other entries cover traditional slang-slang which has been slang for ages, and will likely stay that way for ages more. Other entries take up more contemporary usage, but not so contemporary as to fall from fashion the day after tomorrow. Slang-forming prefixes and suffixes are also given a place, as well as slurred phrases so elusive to the alien ear. Literal meanings, notes on usage, and a bit of etymology are included for greater understanding.

Going beyond polite Japanese the Japanese we sweated blood to learn in school is not easy. But with Beyond Polite Japanese it can be brought within the realm of possibility. And for those who want to read manga and watch anime in Japanese, this book is a must. Some readers may decide that this book is not comprehensive, and therefore think the less of it; but it is not meant to be comprehensive, but to present a rock-solid foundation of some of the most frequently used expressions in the language something to build upon. In fact, there is apparently no comprehensive dictionary of Japanese slang even in the Japanese language, much less in English. Other readers may think that the book is out-of-date; but it is not meant to be "up-to-date" in that sense, but timeless. It is perfectly possible to speak colloquial Japanese without using the most "up-to-date" expressions, but it is very difficult to speak colloquial Japanese, or even understand it, without know the expressions in this book.

Often we are asked by customers what is the best way to study Japanese and often our answer is, to find something that you enjoy about the Japanese language and culture and use that to help facilitate your studies. Whether movies, J-pop, or comics, you'll find yourself with boundless energy to study when you eagerly want to know what people are talking about. This book by Ask Digital Japan is an excellent series for both the beginner and seasoned veteran to quickly learn the Japanese language in no time. Focusing on the lush comic culture that Japan is known for, this paperback supplement gives you a four image comic and goes into great detail about the meaning of each word and the translation of the dialog in plain English. Definitely catering to foreigners and beginners, the comic strips are written in romaji (Roman Alphabet), Hiragana, and Kanji (with furigana pronouncation included), and meanings of key vocabulary words to help anyone develop the Japanese language. Although it is recommended that a student have at least a semester of study (to read the hiragana and basic Kanji), with dedicated effort and practice, beginners will be able to speak in simple phrases in no time.

This edition focuses on the cultural aspects of Japan that one will experience throughout the well defined four seasons, which include New Years Day celebration, summer fireworks festivals, Sakura viewing and more. With countless tidbits that you'll learn in each comic strip, you'll be sure to chuckle at the whimsical antics at the characters that everyone will enjoy. Dennis Recommends!
