| Tattoo art is slowly starting to be accepted in Japan as not just as the mark of a yakuza (Japanese gangster) but a real form of body art that anyone can embrace. This third volume takes a look at several studios, interviewing the various artists and demonstrates their unique designs. Everything from "girly", "surf", "ethnic", "rock" and "street" are featured in this publication showing great examples from actual customers. | TUTTLE061 Japan's Cultural Code Words |
Number in stock: 7 Weight: 581 g. Price: $14.50
Product type: Japan-related book
|
|
| From a Western perspective, the Japanese have an incomprehensible Jekyll-and-Hyde persona-cure, quaint and seductive one moment and outright savage the next. The fastest way to understand the traditional Japanese mindset is through their cultural code words - key terms pregnant with cultural meaning which reveal, define and even control, to some extent, the attitudes and behavior of the Japanese. These key terms encapsulate a system of behavior which often escapes a literal reading of the words or phrases, leaving non-Japanese none the wiser. In this book, experienced Japan had Boye Lafayette De Mente explains the current and historical nuances of 233 of the most important Japanese code words - arranged alphabetically from ageashi ("tripping on your own tongue") to zenrei ("breaking the molds of the past"). Together, these offer indispensible insights into the national character of one of the world's most intriguing societies. (More like this) (Direct link to this product)

| ITUNESCARD iTunes Japan Music Card |
This item is in stock in Japan. Weight: 200 g. $20/$38
Product type: iTunes Japan Music Card
|
|
| Apple's iTunes Music Store is incredibly popular in Japan, with hundreds of thousands of tracks of great music from Japan available for 150 or 200 yen per song. For fans of Japanese music around the world it doesn't seem possible to buy through the Japan iTMS, without a Japanese address and credit card. There is a way, however -- using the Japanese iTunes Music Card from Apple! A prepaid card that's charged with money for music purchases, this is a great way for J-POP/J-ROCK fans all over the world to get access to Japan's top-name music directly through their Mac or PCs. When you click the Add to Cart button for this product, you'll be able to choose a Music Card with the new denominations of 1500 or 3000 yen of credit on it. You can also choose to have the card sent to you normally through the mail from Japan, have the J-List staff send you a scan of your card number through email, or opt for both.
Once you have your iTMS Japan code, follow these easy steps:
- Load iTunes on your Mac or PC. If you don't have it yet, download it from Apple.
- If you've already got an account in your home country, sign out by clicking on the Account button in the upper left hand corner, then Sign Out.
- At the bottom of the iTunes Music Store window, choose the Japan Store. The name may appear in kanji, but it's easy to find.
- Click the Redeem button along the right side of the iTMS, and enter the scratch-off Redeem Code printed on the back of the card when asked.
- iTunes will show you a dialog box asking for your current account. Since we're making a new iTMS account for the Japan sture, click Create Account.
- Follow the steps to create a new account, first agreeing to the iTunes agreement (step 1 of 3), then entering email, birthdate and verification question (step 2).
Important: When signing up for an iTunes account with a pre-paid card, some customers have reported that iTMS won't let you proceed without entering a credit card. In order to bypass this, hit the "Home" button and begin the Redeem process again, and you'll see the "None" button the second time through. This is a known issue that affects Japanese users in Japan as well.
- At step 3, where you are asked for your (Japanese) address. You can enter any address you like. Note that you must enter your name twice, once for "kanji" and once for "pronunciation" (but you can enter the same information into both fields). You can do this in English or any language that's supported by iTunes -- the ability to read Japanese is never required for the iTunes Japan Store -- so for the phonetic spelling you can just enter the same normal English characters as the other 'name' fields. Note that there is no verification performed for any of this information, so you can enter any random address you like.
- Enjoy purchasing great music and audio content directly from Japan in the Japan iTunes Music Store! Now that you have an account tied to a prepaid card, you can get full access to the "Free iTunes Single of the Week" from Japan, and future prepaid card credit can be added to your existing account.
Music from the Japanese iTunes Store is fully compatible with iTunes and iPods from any country. iTunes has no issues with maintaining multiple accounts in more than one music store. It couldn't be simpler! And best of all, you can surf and buy music from your iPhone (version 1.1.1 firmware or higher) or iPod Touch! Just make sure you're signed in to the Japan iTunes Music Store with iTunes when you sync the iPhone/iPod Touch and login data will be carried over.
Note: J-List is providing this iTunes Japan Music Card as a service to J-List customers. The cards must be used in accordance with Apple's iTunes online store policies. iTunes music cards cannot be returned or exchanged for cash in any currency after purchases are processed. Offer void where prohibited.

| KODA017 Beyond Polite Japanese: A Dictionary of Japanese Slang and Colloquialisms |
This item is in stock in San Diego Weight: 255 g. Price: $17.50
Product type: Study Item
|
|
| For people wanting to take a step beyond the textbooks; for anyone wishing to speak like a native without spending two or three decades in the country learning how to do it for such people as this, Beyond Polite Japanese has collected some 500 words and phrases of prodigious interest. Among the entries are very common, unexceptionable words that Japanese take absolutely for granted, but which you, the student of the language, must struggle mightily to make your own. Other entries cover traditional slang-slang which has been slang for ages, and will likely stay that way for ages more. Other entries take up more contemporary usage, but not so contemporary as to fall from fashion the day after tomorrow. Slang-forming prefixes and suffixes are also given a place, as well as slurred phrases so elusive to the alien ear. Literal meanings, notes on usage, and a bit of etymology are included for greater understanding.
Going beyond polite Japanese the Japanese we sweated blood to learn in school is not easy. But with Beyond Polite Japanese it can be brought within the realm of possibility. And for those who want to read manga and watch anime in Japanese, this book is a must. Some readers may decide that this book is not comprehensive, and therefore think the less of it; but it is not meant to be comprehensive, but to present a rock-solid foundation of some of the most frequently used expressions in the language something to build upon. In fact, there is apparently no comprehensive dictionary of Japanese slang even in the Japanese language, much less in English. Other readers may think that the book is out-of-date; but it is not meant to be "up-to-date" in that sense, but timeless. It is perfectly possible to speak colloquial Japanese without using the most "up-to-date" expressions, but it is very difficult to speak colloquial Japanese, or even understand it, without know the expressions in this book.
