| This handy reference book, is designed as an essential companion to the study of written Japanese, and will help you achieve fluency in reading and writing the language in its everyday style.
This book is divided into two sections: The first section presents the 1,006 Essential characters prescribed by the Japanese Ministry of Education to be taught during the six years of Japanese elementary school. These characters are given with their most frequent readings (both on and kun) and definitions, along with examples of their use in compounds to form everyday words. Each character is also accompanied by a stroke-order diagram demonstrating the proper way to write it. The second section presents the 1,945 General Use characters (including the 1,006) adopted by law to be used in publications for a general readership. These characters are listed with their readings and definitions, or with cross references to the first section the book if they already appear there.
A chart for the writing of the katakana and hiragana syllabaries is also included, as well as a complete index of readings of all the characters and compounds in the book. Mastering the Japanese characters presented in this book will enable students to read the vast majority of Japanese newspapers and magazines.

| Taiyaki is a fun Japanese food eaten at Japanese matsuri festivals which is basically a little fish-shaped cake with "anko" sweet beans inside. This is a fantastic kit that lets you make your own "oyako" (parent-and-child) taiyaki, that is, large taiyaki and small taiyaki to go beside it, using your microwave oven. Best of all, since the batter used to make the taiyaki is simple pancake batter, you can make it easily wherever you live. The kit includes the large and small fish-shaped trays, a shaker for mixing the batter w/ pouring spout, shaker insert, and instructions and a recipe idea book in Japanese. To make, prepare 150 grams (2/3 cups) of standard powdered pancake mix, 100 ml (0.4 of a cup) of milk, one egg, 35 grams (3.5 tablespoons) of sugar, and salad oil. Put the pancake mix, egg, milk and sugar in the shaker, then place the shaker insert inside the shaker so the contents will be well mixed when you shake. Shake for 60 seconds, remove the shaker insert, and attach the pouring spout. Using a paper towel or basting brush, put a little oil inside the taiyaki trays to be used. Pour the batter inside each fish mold until it reaches the top, then place the small taiyaki molds over the large mold so that it makes a small depression in the top (which you'll put various ingredients in later). Cook in the microwave (see cooking times below). When you're done, you'll have two halves of the large taiyaki and four haves of the small. Put ingredients inside, like sweet anko beans (if you like), or invent your own! COOKING TIMES: 500 watt microwave: 100 seconds (for large taiyaki) or 40 seconds (for small). 600 watt microwave: 80 seconds for large, 35 seconds for samll. 700 watt microwave, 60 seconds for large, 30 seconds for small.
