J-List's region free DVD players make it easy to enjoy DVDs from every corner of the globe, be it imported anime or "Indies" titles from Japan, Europe-release PAL format discs, or anything. This new player from RJ Tech is loaded with high-end features, including *upscaling* to high-def LCD or Plasma TVs, allowing DVDs to be scaled up to their maximum quality in 720p and 1080i format. It also features an HDMI connection (with included cable), the best way to connect your devices since everything you need is carried through one digital connection. The player also supports MPEG 4 and AVI/XVID files burned onto DVD media, USB drive and SD card video playback, . What more could you ask for in a DVD player?

Peter Says:

What is DIVX? The DIVX standard is a codec for encoding movies and video into extremely small sizes, enabling them to be watched easily on computers with DIVX playback software installed. DIVX movies look great on a computer, but even better when viewed on a TV, with their near-DVD video quality, and this DVD player allows you to burn your favorite movies onto DVD-R media and watch them easily. I love these players because of the many features they offer, even beyond what name-brand players give you, like the ability to throw some JPGs or AVI format movies on a USB drive or SD card and watch them.

For your ordering convenience, this product is stocked in San Diego. It will be speedily shipped to you by our dedicated local staff in San Diego in a protective outer box.

This player features:

The Rube Goldberg Machine is a complex creation that is powered by a domino effect that sets off a chain reaction of activities to ultimately result in a desired (often very simple) action. One prime example of the Rube Goldberg Machine is a famous scene from the movie Goonies that triggers events to open a gate. In NHK's effort to spark the ingenuity in children, the program Pata Gora Suichi (Pythagora Switch) was created, which featured a fantastic and elaborate Rube Goldberg Machine to which the end result was to display the Pata Gora Suichi title with each episode. Although a simple concept, the devices they create are far from simple, often misleading the view to look down when items are actually "falling upwards" and even can be considered a work of art displaying the beauty of physics. This DVD photobook set features 33 of NHK's best machines that will dazzle kids of all ages, and will keep you superglued to the TV set even if you tried to get away. The photobook this DVD comes encased in shows the various devices that were created, details what items were used and shows you the process of creating these devices in your own home. The machines are so inspiring, that you may even choose to follow in the footsteps of these artisans and create your own unique versions. An absolutely wonderful title with a run time of 19 mins.

Vol.1 -Present-

The year 2000. Kasumi Shindo is at first glance a run-of-the-mill high school student in modern-day Japan. However, beneath his normal appearance, Kasumi is in fact a top-notch treasure hunter. This time, Kasumi is aiming to seek out the lost 11th Commandment of Moses. Kasumi discovers that his childhood friend, Reina Tachibana is in southern Europe participating in an archeological dig. Pretending to be a tourist, he visits the excavation area and manages to get put on the excavation staff. But he is not the only treasure hunter looking for the Eleventh Commandment of Moses and before he knows it, he's embroiled in a dangerous adventure.

Vol.2 -Past-

1200 BC A time when God was still demonstrating his powers and making his presence felt to those in the world and people lived simply in small communal groups. One of these hamlets was that of Will Arc. But when the village chieftain Martha refuses to be sacrificed to God, she throws the future of the village into uncertainty. When Martha realizes that she is at death's door, she leaves her son, the Great Swordsman ALES with her last wish before passing away. In order to convey Martha's final words, ALES strikes out alone on a quest for Will, a girl known as "The Song of God".

Vol.3 -Future-

The year 13,800 A.D. Due to an apocalypse that ravaged the entire earth several centuries earlier, humans have been relegated to the position of an endangered species on blighted land. Only a small sliver of green is left, the acidic oceans are aflame and the blue skies remain no more. The earth cannot even produce sustenance for people to survive. Sui was raised the daughter of a florist in City Gilde, but on her 18th birthday things suddenly shift and her peaceful, if poor, life is thrown into turmoil. A sudden coup d’etat occurs and fatally injured in the fray, her surrogate mother, Nene, relays to her a shocking message with her dying words - Sui is actually the last surviving member of the royal family and a princess heir to the throne. So Sui sets out on a journey with Laliela to take the Key of Will bequeathed to her by Nene to the Sage U.

This game is rated U-15, and is recommend for ages 15 and up.

Kasumi Shindo. This 18-year old is a high school student but has a second identity, that of a top treasure hunter. He is seeking the " Eleventh Commandments of Moses". Convinced that ruins discovered on an island in the south of Europe are home to this find, he decides to make a trek there. Learning that a friend form his childhood, Reina Tachibana, whose family he once lived with, is working on an excavation team there he concocts a plan to visit under the pretense of being a tourist.
Ai Tachibana. Reina's younger sister and Kasumi's bride to be as arranged by their parents, Ai pretends that she detests the idea of marrying Kasumi, but in fact she is really crazy about him. Ai decides to use her summer vacation to help her sister on the excavation and is initially excited about seeing Kasumi after a gap of ten years, but once they meet they can't seem to keep from fighting with each other.
Reina Tachibana. Ai's older sister and a professor of Archeology at a university in England, Reina is in charge of the excavation team. While suffering and sometimes unreliable due to a lack of common sense, she brings to her work, a wealth of specialized knowledge. She detests treasure hunters and the way they ravage the culturally valuable ruins, but hasn't yet clued into Kasumi's true identity.
Arglelech. An up and coming treasure hunter who has recently reared his head. In contrast to his chosen profession, he is not especially attached to money and does not appear to be very aware of the stigma of being a treasure hunter. It seems that in his past somewhere lies a connection with Kasumi.

Ales. A swordsman of such skill that his name spreads far beyond his own hamlet. He harbors serious doubts that the "Will of God" is not what makes people suffer. To discover the truth for himself, he sets out on a journey alone. A man of strong moral fiber and unflagging courage, he soon gains a group of steadfast companions. Aqua. A strange young girl encountered in Plen Arc, she is in actuality, one of God's four mediums. By all appearances, she is merely a child, but in reality is older than ALES and talks as if she were an adult. She takes an interest in ALES and decides to help him under certain conditions.
Will. Lives in Plen Arc. She is a member of "Song of God" and tasked with the duty of conveying the will of God to people through dance. God called to her, but because she defied him, the oracles have decimated Plen Arc. When ALES arrives in Plen Arc, she has gone missing. The question is whether she perished with the city, or... Quake. A man that lives in the seaside hamlet of Sea Arc also happens to be an oracle. Normally living a quiet life with the fishermen of Sea Arc, QUAKE cuts a bold figure and has a personality that leaves an impression. Despite appearances, he is also a man of deep reflection and possesses a wealth of knowledge. A certain incident drives him to join forces in taking action with ALES.

Sui. Raised as the daughter of a florist, on her 18th birthday a coup d'etat occurs and she is told by her surrogate mother, Nene, that she is the last member of the royal family. But because of the coup d'etat, she is unable to ascend to the thrown and Nene is killed by the conspirators behind the political takeover. Bequeathed the "Key of Will" with which she has been entrusted, she sets off on a journey with Laliela to see that it is delivered to the Sage U. Laliela. Laliela is Nene's sister, but she has been raised with Sui since she was a child. Laliela knows that Sui is the royal princess and she was raised as her bodyguard cum maid-in-waiting. She is truly an incredible fighter. She does not wear her heart on her sleeve and takes a cool attitude to all encounters, but begins to change as she journeys with Sui.
Titi. Titi lives in Towngilde and has taken over for her missing father, a scientist of great renown. Following in his footsteps, Titi is in charge of overseeing the Imperial office program in charge of demystifying the technologies used in the hyper-advanced science savvy civilizations of antiquity with an eye to opening up the technologies to the public. After meeting Sui, Titi decides to depart on her journey with her. Tazta. A young man living in Village Gilde. Though young, he is independent and proud of this. There is nothing he despises more than being treated like a child. While looking for his sister that he lost contact with in the old capital, he falls for Laliela the instant he sees her and joins up with Sui and company, deciding to journey with them.

Studio Ghibli completists will definitely be interested in this -- "Short Short", a complete collection of all the odds and ends (commercials, music videos) that Ghibli has created over the years, from 1992 to 2005. Included in this 42 minute collection are shorts directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Yoshifumi Kondou, Yoshiyuki Momose, Osamu Tanabe, Shinji Hashimoto, and Takeshi Inamura, and feature not only new characters, but familiar characters from Totoro, Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, and more. The styles of the shorts vary as well, sometimes simple, sometimes rich, and sometimes experimental, these 42 minutes are fascinating animation from start to finish. Presented in chronological order and presented in full frame or letterbox where appropriate, we'll see commercials for Lawsons (a convenience store chain), their advertisement for the the Ghibli Museum, and the excellent House Curry commercials, which capture the feeling of Japan during the Showa era. Of particular interest to Ghibli fans are the music videos -- the very rare "On Your Mark" (aka "Castles in the Sky") video by Chage & Aska presented here on DVD for the first time (this video also has an English track and full English subtitles) directed by Miyazaki himself. Other music videos are the futuristic trio of stories by Yasutaka Nakada ("Portable Airport" "Space Station No.9" and "Floating City Planning") and the singalong by Meiko Haigou, "The 'Which? Which?" Song". A special bonus is the accompanying booklet that describes all the pieces along with storyboards and other information. Finally all the odds and ends of the Ghibli world are available on one convenient DVD. Region 2, 2.0 & 5.1ch Dolby (where applicable), full frame and letterbox where applicable.

Peter Says:

This is a really cute game for any standard DVD player, which is good because it gives you the option of playing the game on the large TV in your living room. Can you help the three witches-in-training bring the world of the Mages and the Humans back together? If you like this title, be sure and play the other Hirameki games.

Long, long ago, there was a world in which mages and humans existed in harmony. Deep contrasts in their two cultures, however, caused differences that could not be overcome between the two races. The humans feared the great power of the mages, and hunted them, trying to erase their kind from the earth. God felt pity for their plight and created a world of magic for them, which they could go to in peaceful exile. In this way the mages faded from the Earth, and all contact between the two peoples ceased. Each continued on their own paths, the humans that of civilization, and mages that of magic.

A few hundred years have passed since that time, and the mages are hopeful that, once again, the two races can live in harmony together. In the hope of finding a way to bridge their differences, the mages send out their young acolytes for training in the world of the humans. If the younger generations of the two peoples can find a way of connecting, perhaps the acolytes could gain important knowledge that will enable the two groups to live together again. This year three young wizards will cross over into the world of humans... Two of them are elite, and one a total drop out. Can they reunite the two peoples of Earth and the World of Magic?

An excellent interactive DVD game from Hirameki International, welcome to the world of Tea Society of a Witch. Playable on any standard DVD player (also compatible with PC or Mac DVD software, Playstation 2, Xbox etc.), you use your DVD player controller to make selections and advance in the game. A perfect item for fans of hentai games without the hentai!

This game is rated M for mature, due to suggestive romantic themes. Recommended for age 17 and up. The game comes with a limited-edition art book, too.

Studio Ghibli has come into its own as one of the world's foremost animation houses. This latest DVD release tells the story of a young girl, Haru, who saves a cat prince from being hit by a truck. In return for saving his son's life, the king of cats changes Haru into a cat to marry his son. But everything is not as it would seem, a war rages between the cats, and Haru isn't so sure she's up to marrying the prince.

Directed by Hiroyuki Morita and based loosely on the manga Baron - Neko No Danshaku by Aoi Hiragi, it serves as an unofficial sequel to Whisper of the Heart, including many of the same characters from the cat world. Softer in tone and pace than many of the other Ghibli titles such as Mononoke Hime or Porco Rosso, it is still a Ghibli film in heart and spirit. Captivating, funny, and a treat for audiences who enjoy storylines over violence and action.

Filmed in wide-screen, 16:9 format, The Cat Returns has optional Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Japanese subtitles.

Included with The Cat Returns is a hilarious look at childhood days of the main character who works at an animation studio with a suspiciously similar name. Called Gibri's: Episode 2, it is a powerhouse of interesting and imaginative animation. A 25-minutes short about first crushes, it's a sweet and funny addition to an already great DVD. Shot in widescreen format with optional English or Japanese subtitles.

100 minutes of great Ghibli animation accompanied by a second DVD with promotional TV sports, character boards, the making of, and great additions. An impressive 160 minutes on the second disc, making this a fantastic buy for all fans of Hayao Miyazaki!

The runaway hit anime movie from Hayao Miyazaki, this is Spirited Away (Japanese title Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, or the Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro), the film that sunk Titanic as the top-grossing film of all time in Japan. This is the brand new DVD release from Studio Ghibli and Buena Vista Home Entertainment, and it's a dynamite one for fans and collectors of Hayao Miyazaki's excellent feature films.

The charming story follows Chihiro, a girl who is moving to a new town with her parents. They stop to check out an old run-down amusement park, and the next thing Chihiro knows, she's thrown into a world of strange spirits, dragons, speaking frogs, a magical witch, all no less strange than Alice in Wonderland. Of course it's a visual masterpiece, easily the most beautiful animation you've ever seen from Mr. Miyazaki to date. We highly recommend this excellent film to all fans of Studio Ghibli, and are extremely glad to be able to offer it to you!

The film features subtitles in English, French and Japanese, and dubbed soundtrack in French and Japanese. The film is provided on 2 DVDs and features many extras, as with all Studio Ghibli's DVD film releases.

Spirited Away is a beautiful film, full of incredible scenes and characters that will be especially eye-opening to the Western eye. The images of what Chihiro encounters in the spirit world and call to mind Lewis Carroll very clearly. An incredible combinations of inventions of Mr. Miyazaki's and snippets from tales in ancient Japan and China, this is fabulous example of the quality and dedication that has made Mr. Miyazaki the most famous Japanese person in outside of Japan.

You can enjoy the film either with English, French or Japanese subtitles, or dubbed in French, too!

On the Extras disc, you can view the film in storyboard mode, a great way to get insight on the movie and the director.

Directed by Yoshifumi Kondo and produced by Hayao Miyazaki, this tells the story of the Shizuku, an average 14 year old Japanese girl with a more than active imagination, and of the journey she makes from girlhood into something more, of first girlish love and a rite of passage. A pleasant story that's presented both subtitled in English on these two DVDs -- the only way you can enjoy this film in English! Other extras include all storyboards for the film, watchable in order with the film soundtrack, all film trailers, a feature on the artwork in Japanese, and more. A great Japanese animated film from Studio Ghibli!

In the world known as Earthsea, there is a disturbance in the balance of life. Magic is losing its power, crops failing, live stock are dying and two dragons appear to devour each other, a sign that the balance of the world is falling apart. The archemage (greatest of all wizards) named Ged (aka Sparrowhawk) sets out for a journey to discover the reason for this imbalance, leading him to Arran, an exiled prince constantly running from a shadow that fills him with fear. This leads them to a town filled with corruption where addicts walk the streets, and slaves are traded, eventually leading Ged to discover that Cob, an old defeated adversary seeks to open a realm between the living and the dead to exact his revenge.

Gedo Senki (aka Ged's War or Tales from Earthsea) is a film loosely based on the third novel The Farthest Shore of the Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin and is Goro Miyazaki's (the son of the Hayao Miyazaki) directorial debut. The characters are well produced, each one having their own inner conflicts that they must face, and show how they depend on each other's strengths to survive the adventures to come. With the help of the talented Studio Ghibli animation studios, Tales from Earthsea becomes another masterpiece worthy of your collection.

This DVD purchase is for the 2 DVD set which contains the original movie plus a supplementary disc filled with trailers, and films the storyboard sketch drawings played along side the entire audio soundtrack of the movie. Filmed in Widescreen 16:9 format and comes with English subtitles and can be switched between the original Japanese dubbing and English dubbing as well! A must have for any Studio Ghibli fan! Movie runtime 115 mins.
