One of the questions we get asked at J-List a lot is, "I want to start learning Japanese, what book do you recommend?" Most textbooks are entirely dry, uninteresting, and cannot follow a student's pace, leaving students frustrated. However, a new series by The Japan Times has recently taken Japanese language for foreigners by storm, and comes highly recommended by anyone who has taken it -- Genki, An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese. The entire course has 23 lessons, guiding the student from the beginning until the student has mastered elementary grammar and can read not only hiragana and katakana but over 300 of the most commonly used kanji as well.

Each lesson has: 1) a dialogue introducing vocabulary and grammar in a situation the student may find familiar; 2) a list of the vocabulary with hiragana, katakana, kanji and English meaning; 3) grammar with full explanations in English; 4) interesting usage notes; 5) several pages of practice questions designed to be fun and interesting incorporating dialogue skills, writing skills, and thinking skills; 6) additional vocabulary. Each lesson also has a complementary lesson in hiragana/katakana/kanji, with reading and writing exercises. The separate workbook has more writing exercises and kanji writing practice. This is simply the recommended textbook for anyone beginning Japanese up to 3rd level in the JLPT.

THIS BOOK: This book is the answer key book containing all the answers to both Genki I and Genki II, for both the workbook and textbook. All the exercises are answered here, with page numbers corresponding to their place in the Genki workbooks and textbooks. Furthermore, this book contains the complete transcriptions to the listening sections of the workbook. This is a necessary companion for those doing self-study with the Genki workbook/textbook for those who want to check their answers by themselves. 7" x 10" (18 x 25.5 cm) 72 pages, card cover perfectbound.

Shigekix is the delicious candy that gives a new meaning to the word sour, often causing people to contort their faces in sour shock horror. Giving your taste buds a yummy and rude awakening of fruity flavor, they now "function" to give your brain a wake up call as Aha! Brain Shigekix. Fortified with BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acids), "Shigekix Aha! Brain" works to stimulate your brain cells to give you more moments of "Aha!" when you figure out the solutions to complex problems (or maybe simple ones, 'proving' that they actually work). Either way, it's another delicious treat from the wacky masterminds in Japan. A yummy super energy drink "genki" flavor in a hard gummy candy. (More like this) (Direct link to this product)

Beginning kanji study needn't be difficult -- this new series by Alc (who also produce the only monthly magazine for Japanese language study directed at students, the Nihongo Journal) allows us to master the essentials of kanji, covering levels 4 and 3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, with only 15 minutes of practice a day! Each lesson contains 6 kanji. Each kanji is introduced with onyomi and kunyomi (the Chinese and Japanese pronunciations. Each kanji also has sample words made with that kanji along with sample sentences to practice understanding and reading in context. Finally, the writing of the kanji is shown (with stroke order) and you are given space to practice writing the kanji. In the second section of the book are short quizzes that test your understanding, and an answer key and index are included. The two volumes together help you learn 555 kanji, and translations are given in English, Chinese and Korean as well. An excellent way to learn kanji -- in small daily doses kanji practice is incredibly manageable and fun at the same time without getting over your head, and if you practice every day, within 3 months you will have a mastery over the kanji necessary for the two lower levels of the JLPT as well as a head start on 2nd level kanji. This purchase is for Volume One (Jou), the first half of this course. 190 pages, perfectbound. Recommended Level: Beginner, but as there is no romaji, the student should be able to already read hirogana and katakana before starting this course. (More like this) (Direct link to this product)

There's exactly one way to write kanji characters correctly, with a specific stroke order for each that you're supposed to keep to every time you write. The trouble is, Japanese people themselves eventually forget this proper way to write, making their characters sloppy and hard to read. Here's a great learning tool to help both Japanese people and foreigners write kanji well. In this great learning tool, you write all the characters learned in first through sixth grade, with a digital teacher inside the game who judges how well you wrote. This second Nintendo DS kanji learning tool goes beyond the sixth grade all the way through the end of Junio High School, the official end of formal kanji learning in Japan.
