| The Yokozuna is the highest rank in sumo wrestling, often recognized by the large, heavy "Shimenawa" rope around their waist. Two conflicting legends state the birth of the Yokozuna, one stating that a 9th century wrestler named Hajikami wore the shimenawa as a handicap and dared anyone to grab it, while the other says, legendary wrestler Akashi Shiganosuke wore it as a sign of respect when visiting the Emperor, who then decided to dub him Yokozuna. Whatever the true legend is, it has brought fourth a tremendous tradition that is a long and grueling, yet rewarding process.
