The feeling of walking on tatami mats is replicated in these sandals, made right here in Japan. The Japanese have worn sandals for centuries, and many men wear them still, often well into winter. This excellent set of footwear from Japan combines both the traditional style and modern sensibility. Based on a thick sturdy foam and rubber sole like most modern sandals, it boasts a woven tatami top and soft, cloth bindings to keep them on your foot. The cloth is decorated in a mari (ball) pattern of blue and other vibrant colors. Very traditional with an elegant shape. We normally carry this type of sandal for adults, but these were so cute we just had to get them for the kids out there. These are sturdy and well-made with real Japanese tatami and reinforced stitching along the edges. The straps are soft and comfortable and the foam soles are bouncy and light. Now the young ones can enjoy the sense of walking on tatami too! The Japanese have worn sandals for centuries, and many men wear them still, often well into winter. This excellent set of footwear from Japan is based on the idea of the setta, but modernizes them with a soft rubber-soled bottom, and a soft traditional clay dyed belt. The feet rest on a smooth bamboo platform that is sewn into the setta and measure 25.5 cm (10 inches) from end to end, 9 cm (3.5 inches) wide and 19.5 cm (7.6 inches) from the thong to the heel (please do be sure to check your own measurements before purchasing). These are exquisitely made, and very comfortable sandals. Very fashionable. Note: the "hanao" part (the cloth material part that fits between the toes) should be tight at first place but it gets looser as you wear it and will gradually fit your size.
