The traditional art of shodo, or the "Way of Writing" with a calligraphy brush, is one of the many things imported from China but perfected in Japan. Here's a super miniature set containing everything you need to start writing Japanese calligraphy contained in this wooden box. You get a telescoping writing brush with tip, a real stone ink holder that's called a "suzuri," and a stick of ink, called "sumi." Put a little water in the ink holder and scrape the ink stick over it about 100 times, and you'll have beautiful india ink that's ready for writing.
